Pick-A-Project: Support A Runner

The young women in the Residential Treatment Program (ages 12-18) engage in the running program to address physical and mental health concerns and as part of their personal “safety plans”, which emphasize ways to manage emotions in times of stress. The opportunity to set and achieve personal goals is an important part of their overall plan for healing. Volunteers coach practice sessions several times a week. The girls participate in local competitions as important milestones in their efforts.

The Residential Treatment Program will serve about 70 girls in 2014-2015. More than half will choose to participate in the running program. The young women have the opportunity to participate in special opportunities, such as Girls On The Run, which uses running to teach a wide range of life skills such as time management, conflict resolution and healthy eating habits. Competing in and finishing a 5K race is a milestone they will take with them for the rest of their lives.

Costs

The cost to support a runner for 7-8 months (average length of stay) is about  $550. This covers the cost of clothing for hot and cool weather, shoes, underclothes, and entry fees for several competitions. (TheVillage has discounted sources to purchase these items.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we donate the actual item? Do you take gently used items? No! Used and donated items can be difficult to match up to a particular girl. For this project, cash is preferred. Some retail sponsors help with deeply discounted opportunities.

Can I help with the running group? Yes! Adults (21 or older) may volunteer. Practices are held several weekday afternoons. Volunteers will need to provide criminal clearances, background checks, and a medical evaluation. We’ll guide you through the process. Contact volunteer@village1877 or 610-519-1615.

Can I cheer the girls on at a race? Yes! Watch for race postings on our Facebook page. You don’t have to be on Facebook to see our page.
